Ruby L. McKelvey, 83, of Monmouth, Illinois, died at 2:15 A.M. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at home. She was born October 27, 1930 in rural Knox County Illinois, the sixth child of Robert Darris and Clara Hardesty Simonson. Ruby spent her earlier years in the Alexis and Gerlaw areas. She was a graduate of Alexis High School. Ruby married Robert Lee McKelvey on August 6, 1948 and he preceded her in death on February 2, 2002. Ruby worked for Contel (GTE-Verizon-Kerigan ) as first secretary to the district manager, and then District Material and Supply Supervisor for Central (Aledo) and South (Mascautah) Districts. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary and Telephone Pioneers. Those left to cherish her memory are one son, Michael Lee (Anita) McKelvey of Monmouth IL, two grandchildren, Ryan Sykes of Peoria IL, and Amy Sykes of Burlington IA, one sister in law Bernice Schmudde of Lisle, IL, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, two brothers, and sister in law Bonnie Brown. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, April 18, 2014 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth with Rev. Jon Sims of the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Alexis Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday morning at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth, where her family will be present for visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorial may be left to the First United Methodist Church, or Warren County Relay for Life.
