Robert Earl Cornell

Robert Earl Cornell, 99, of Alexis, Illinois, passed away peacefully at 2:12 a.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg.

Born June 5, 1926, in Rossville, Illinois, Robert was the son of Arthur O. and Hattie (Bertram) Cornell. On April 21, 1946, he married the love of his life, Virginia M. Crawford. They shared 76 wonderful years together before her passing on November 17, 2022.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; sons Jack and Bobby Cornell; and daughter-in-law Laura Cornell. He is survived by his son, Richard Cornell; daughters-in-law Joanie Cornell, Billie Cornell, and Shirley Cornell; grandchildren Crystal (Will) Nulton, Jamey Cornell (Sara Combs), Cynthia Cornell, Tony (Jennifer) Cornell, Kimberly Nickell, Scott Cornell, and Brenda Cornell; and great-grandchildren Alexis (Cade) Brown, Tara Cornell (Cory Williams), Kaylee Cornell (Alex Miller), Anthony “Bubby” Cornell, Emily Nulton, Marshall Nulton, Sarabeth Nickell, Myley Nickell, Berklee Hanson, Millie Brown, Elliot Brown, Zaylee Combs, and Aubree Miller.

A dedicated and hardworking man, Robert served as a federal meat inspector until his retirement in 1990. He was a proud member of the Free Masons for more than 50 years and devoted much of his time to serving as an election judge for Warren County. A man of faith, Robert was a long-time member of Village Baptist Church in Alexis, where he will be fondly remembered for his kindness and friendship.

Robert and Virginia shared a love for the outdoors and spent countless cherished days camping at Lake Warren. Above all, Robert’s greatest joy was his family. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, gentle spirit, and the deep love he held for those around him.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexis/North Henderson Ambulance and left in the care of the funeral home.
