Marvin R. Hawk

Marvin Ray Hawk, age 82 of Roseville, Illinois, passed away at the Roseville Rehabilitation and Health Care at 10:25 pm Thursday, April 29, 2021. Marvin was the son of Clarence Mathew and Gertrude Irene Ross Hawk. He was raised on a farm near Roseville and attended the Ellison country school and Roseville Junior High and High School, graduating with the class of 1957. Marvin married his high school sweetheart, Diane Hollenberg, November 29, 1959 at the Roseville Christian Church. He started farming at the age of 20 and retired from farming at 70 years old.

In the late 1970s, Marvin and Diane owned and operated Hawk Company for 18 years north of Roseville, selling seed, field sprayers, and Raven spray monitors. In retirement, Marvin completed courses for his real estate broker license and worked for Century 21 in Macomb.

Currently, Marvin was serving on the Warren County Historical Museum Board. He was elected twice to the Warren County Board, serving for eight years. During the 1970s and 1980s, he served several terms as the Roseville Township Supervisor. He was an active member of the Warren County Ducks Unlimited. For his service, Marvin received the District Chairman Award for the Northwest Region for the Warren County Ducks Unlimited Chapter in 1999. He served on the Warren County Fair Board for three years and was secretary in 1969 through 1970. He was also a former member of the Roseville Lions Club.

Marvin loved his family and was proud of their accomplishments. He enjoyed going to auctions and antique shops with his wife. He also was fond of his hometown. This was reflected in two historical exhibits Marvin and Diane created in two rooms of the Roseville Community Center. Because he enjoyed woodworking as a hobby, one of the exhibits features Marvin’s hand-built replica of Roseville in 1900. He restored antique wooden boats and numerous pieces of furniture for the Hawk home. He and Diane also restored two homes in Roseville.

Marvin was featured in two episodes of Illinois Stories on PBS, the history of Roseville, Illinois at the Warren County Museum and his collection of antique wooden boats.

As avid fishermen, Marvin and Diane loved finding two to three free days to take their boat to Mark Twain Lake, fishing for crappie. Marvin and Diane also enjoyed vacations by train. One memorable trip was to Alaska, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. Recently, they purchased a 1921 Ford Model T – C Cab truck and frequently participated in parades and car shows, bringing home additional awards.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Diane of 61 years; a daughter, Sara (Dennis Young) of Macomb and a son, Mark (Shelly) Hawk of Aledo; a granddaughter, Rachel (Jared) Brown of Springfield, Illinois and a grandson, Nicholas (Rachel) Hawk, serving in the U.S. Army in Italy. He is also survived by one brother, Elmer and sister-in-law, Marybeth Hawk of Roseville; sister-in-law, Sue Hawk of Monmouth.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence Junior and George William, and one infant sister, Golda Irene.

Graveside Service will be held Tuesday May 4, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Roseville Township Cemetery in Roseville, Il.  Friends may call at the Wise Family Funeral Home in Roseville on Monday the family will not be present.  Memorials may be made to the Roseville Community Center or the Warren County Historical Museum.
