Marvin L. Carson

Marvin L. Carson, 94, of Gerlaw, IL passed away Friday, December 29, 2017, 10:05 a.m. at his home.  He was born Monday, November 6, 1923, in rural Gerlaw, IL the son of Paul and Edith (Gardener) Carson.  He married Patsy M. Page at the First Baptist Church of Monmouth, IL on December 25, 1950.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife  Patsy M. Carson of Gerlaw, IL; children: Beverly (Rusty) Orwig ofNorth Henderson, IL, Nancy Jo Carson of Alexis, IL, Bob (Susie) Carson of Gerlaw, IL and Janice Martinez of Galesburg, IL; grandchildren Jeff (Pam) Orwig, Randi (Joe) Grodjesk, Jenny (Trent) McKeown, Justin (Angie) Lafferty, Janelle (Eric) Duckwiler, Gary (Amanda) Carson, Chris (Miranda) Carson, and Joshua (Jessica) Esters; 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and 1 son-in-law (Don Martinez).
He started at Science Hall and Chapmen.  He graduated Alexis High School in 1942.  He briefly attended the University of Illinois until he enlisted in the US Navy.  He was inducted on October 5, 1943, in Chicago, IL.  He served in WWII serving on the USS West Virginia BB48 in the Pacific Theater.  He was in the Invasion of Leyte Gulf, the Battle of Surigao Strait, Invasion of the Philippines, the on to Iwo Jima, then Okinawa and Tokyo Bay where the peace treaty was signed and he was discharged March 22, 1946.  He farmed his entire life.  He handled livestock and drove for Russell Lydic.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the James Harvey Scott Post #189 American Legion Post for over 50 years.  He was a lifetime member of the Farm Bureau.  He was a member of the Warren County Antique Tractor Association.  He was a life long member of the Gerlaw Christian Church serving as Elder for 20 years and was currently Elder Emeritus.  He served as President of the Gerlaw Cemetery Association.  He was devoted to his family and farm.  He was diagnosed and with courage and dignity fought ALS over the last year.
Funeral service will be Wednesday, January 3, 2018, 11:00 a.m. at the Gerlaw Christian Church Gerlaw, IL.  Burial will be in the Gerlaw Cemetery Gerlaw, IL.  Memorials may be made to the Gerlaw Christian Church.  Please sign the online guestbook at www.wisefamilyfuneralhome.com.  Wise Family-Hoover Hall Funeral Home Alexis, IL is in charge of the arrangements.
