Gary L Simkins

Gary L. “Flattop” Simkins, 83, of Alexis, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2026 at OSF St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois. He was born February 22, 1943 in Rock Island, Illinois, the son of Robert “Red” and Lois (Warder) Simkins. He was raised and educated in central Illinois, graduating from Alexis High School.

Gary married Evelyn Miller on February 23, 1964 at the Alexis United Presbyterian Church and she survives.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife; Evelyn, of Alexis; children, Kim (Rick) Benson, Kelly (Randy) Frick, Scott Simkins & Richa, Kerri (Dave) Marshall; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; siblings, Janice Hintz and Mike Simkins as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Red & Lois Simkins; in-laws, Cecil & Ruby Miller; brother, Bill Simkins; brothers-in-laws, Howard, Earl and Rob Miller, one sister-in-law, Juanita Holloway and one grandson Coltin Simkins.

Gary worked as a truck driver for many years before becoming a self-employed carpenter. He loved camping, trail rides, horseback riding, golf and socializing. He had a very distinctive chuckle that everyone loved to hear. His greatest joy was his family.

Cremation rites have been accorded with a celebration of Gary’s life to be held Sunday June 28th at 2pm-5pm at the Alexis Community Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alexis Fire Department or the charity of your choice. Moore Memorial Home, Alexis, is handling the arrangements.
