Donald R. Bertelsen, 87, of Little York, died 11:40 A.M. Sunday, October 7, 2012 in Monmouth.

He was born June 26, 1925 in Spring Grove Township, Warren County Illinois, the son of Andrew and Laura (Nielson) Bertelsen. He was raised and educated in the Little York area and attended the Cedar Creek School and Little York High School.

Don married Mary Allen at the First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, on June 7, 1946 and she survives.

Don was a farmer who enjoyed farming and caring for the family farm his entire life.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Monmouth where he served on the church council and Stephen Ministry Program. He was a 4-H leader, served on the Extension Advisory Council and was a frequent blood donor.

Surviving is his wife, Mary Bertelsen of Little York; 3 sons, Allen L. (Pat) Bertelsen of Glen Ellyn, IL, Thomas A. (Sue) Bertelsen of Little York, Brian S. Bertelsen of Dodge City, IA; 2 daughters, Shirley (C.J.) Madden of Springfield, MO and Sally A. Hanneman of Goodlettsville, TN; 9 grandchildren, Beth Bertelsen Dornbush, Andrew Bertelsen, Nathan Madden, Kiersten Madden, Carrie Pollard, Chris Bertelsen, Maribeth Gambill, Cole Bertelsen, and Chloe Bertelsen; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mary Millar of Kirkwood, Betty Ballard of Little York and Martha (Carl) Marklevitz of Dorr, MI; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen Richey; and two brothers, Orville Bertelsen and John Bertelsen.

Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2012 at the First Lutheran Church, Monmouth with Rev. Keith Killinger officiating. Internment of ashes will follow at the Warren County Memorial Park. Friends may call Thursday at Hoover Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth where the family will be present from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial may be made to the First Lutheran Church, Monmouth.
