David E. Peterson, 83, of Avon, Illinois, passed away Thursday, November 20 at Beardstown Health and Re-Hab. He was born September 27, 1942, in Methodist Hospital, Peoria to Albert and Geraldine (Baker) Peterson. He married Mary Anna Cary June 6, 1971, one of Avon’s local teachers for many years. He is survived by Mary, his beloved wife of fifty-three years.
He attended grade school in Lacon, junior high in Abingdon and junior high and high school in Avon. February of 1964 to February 1970 saw him in the United States Army Reserve. David was always active in civic matters as he pursued his banking interests: twenty years as Union Township supervisor, several years as Republican Precinct Committeeman, etc. His years of employment consisted of ten years at First National Bank of Galesburg, twenty years at Avon’s Tompkins State Bank, and twenty years at Illinois River Correction Center as an advanced accountant.
David always said he never applied for a job. When he went to see about what was available, he was hired because someone sent him or called him.
David purchased the original Ford Garage on Avon Main Street and operated it as Old South Main Street Antiques and Collectibles for over thirty years until 2024.
